Rooms For Less

The furniture movers were nice enough, but they just underestimated their ability to do damage to my downstairs window and to the furniture. The large dresser was actually too large to fit up the staircase. But they insisted they could make it work. They shoved the large, heavy dresser up the stairs, but they put a hole in the back of it on the way up. The top rim of the dresser was also damaged. Two different guys came to my house later to fix the damage to the dresser. The repairs were decent, but it still didn't look like brand new furniture when you looked at it closely. Also there remained cracks and bubbles in the top rim of the dresser. The cracks and bubbles were in this thin coat of "oak" that covered the furniture. At first glance the furniture appears to be solid oak, but it isn't. The furniture is heavy and study like oak, but a large percentage of it appears to be some kind of wood covered with this thin "oak" layer. It's convincing - it fooled me, and I'm fairly thorough when it comes to inspection. Of course in the store none of those things are visible. In addition to the dresser were a king bed and two night stands. The headboard and foot board look impressive, but the headboard had posts on each side that screwed on to a bolt. Both sides were wobbly and couldn't be fully tightened down. They fool people as long as they're not touched. The posts on both the foot board and headboard are also partially hollow. I figured this out when I noticed a small hole in one of the foot board posts. I was able to look inside the post and see more of the non-oak material. The rest of it "looked" fine, but the damage was already done. Lastly, the drawers in the night stands and dresser were coming apart. The front piece of wood (where the handle is) is made of thin layers of wood pressed together. I had to take 11 of the 14 total drawers to the store for repairs. I was given the runaround for months. I called to check on the progress of the repairs to the drawers, and I talked to several different people.  One person told me the drawers were to shipped out of state for repairs. Someone else told me the drawers were still in the store, and someone would get back to me. After months of being on their pay-no-mind list, I showed up at the store and demanded an answer. Only then after seeing the angry power lifter standing before them did they take me seriously. It took only a few more days, and the repairs were done. If it weren't such a hassle, I would have demanded they replace all of it with real furniture. But I just wanted it to be over. I treated them with more respect than they deserved.
